Home rebuilds and renovations in Bethpage

Central Park, Grumman and the postwar years

Bethpage went by another name for decades. Its post office became Central Park in 1867 and switched back to Bethpage after Bethpage State Park opened in 1932, and the Town’s own history still mentions the Central Park (now Bethpage) Fire Department. Bedelltown was an early name for the northern section. From 1936 to 1994 the hamlet was home to the Grumman Aircraft Engineering Corporation, and across the Town, the war years turned farmland into factories and new housing.

Census figures put the median year built at 1957, and two of every three homes were finished before 1960. Owners here often compare a top-to-bottom remodel with taking the house down and building again.

How a project works in Bethpage

Two hamlets, one Town building office

Neither Bethpage nor Plainedge is an incorporated village; the Town of Oyster Bay counts both among its unincorporated communities. Building and demolition permits for either one go through the Town’s Department of Planning and Development, and its Building Division handles the applications.

Straight to Jason

ZDE Enterprises has one owner, and he is the one you talk to. Jason answers the phone, looks the job over on site and puts the estimate together at no charge.

The machines we dig with are ours, the terms are in a written contract, and we do not take work outside Nassau County.

Bethpage trees, bonds and demolition paperwork

Before the permit issues

If a tree on private property has to go, the Town of Oyster Bay has a Tree Preservation Removal Application for it, made under the tree chapter of its code (Chapter 225), and its tree inspector may call for replacement trees. Street trees at the curb are a separate Highway Division application.

For the demolition itself, the Town holds the permit until security is filed with the Commissioner of Planning and Development. Its bond sheet accepts a certified bank or teller’s check, or a paper performance bond that names the location and address of the demolition. The County’s rule is that work starts no more than ten days after the inspection date shown on the rodent-free certificate.

Bethpage Home Building and Remodeling Questions

Questions, answered

Common questions about building in Bethpage.

Not answered here?

Call and ask. You talk to the owner: 516-506-3928.

Who issues demolition permits in Bethpage?

The Town of Oyster Bay’s Department of Planning and Development, through its Building Division. That holds for Plainedge as well, since both are unincorporated hamlets with no village building department. Town Building Division

Was Bethpage once called Central Park?

Yes. The local post office took the name Central Park in 1867 and went back to Bethpage after Bethpage State Park opened in 1932. The Town’s history page still refers to the Central Park (now Bethpage) Fire Department. Town history

What kind of bond does the Town accept for a demolition?

A certified bank or teller’s check, or a paper performance bond. A paper bond must state the location and address of the demolition, and the Town will not issue the permit until the security is on file. Town bond requirements (PDF)

Is a tree permit needed in Bethpage?

For trees on private land, the Town’s form is its Tree Preservation Removal Application, and replacement trees may be required. Curbside trees in the right-of-way use a separate Highway Division form. Tree removal application (PDF)

Which utilities need disconnect letters before a demolition?

The Town’s instructions name gas, oil tank, electric, water and sewer, plus a cesspool if there is one, with the cesspool marked on the survey. The local sewer district issues a separate sewer disconnect permit. Town instructions (PDF)

Do you take jobs in Plainedge?

Yes. Plainedge is covered the same as Bethpage: ZDE takes work across Nassau County, Jason writes a free estimate after seeing the property, and every job has a written contract.
