Home rebuilds and renovations in Carle Place

Six hundred houses from 1946

In 1946 William J. Levitt bought 19 acres near the Carle Place station of the Long Island Rail Road, and his crews put up 600 low-cost houses from pre-cut lumber. A New York State Senate resolution calls them the prototype for Levittown, a few miles off. Returning veterans and their families moved in quickly; within five years the population had grown by 500 percent.

Census figures put the median year built at 1954, and about four in five homes went up before 1960. Owners of these early postwar houses tend to weigh adding on and modernizing against taking the house down and building new.

How a project works in Carle Place

A Town hamlet with one permit office

Carle Place is a hamlet, not a village, in the Town of North Hempstead. Building work here answers to the Town’s Buildings Department, responsible for the New York State and Town building codes in the Town’s unincorporated parts, and the issuer of building and plumbing permits. Applications are lodged on the Town’s MyToNH portal rather than at a village hall.
