Home rebuilds and renovations in West Hempstead

A railroad name from 1893

The name West Hempstead first showed up on maps in 1893, on a Long Island Rail Road station. Three stations now sit inside the hamlet’s borders, West Hempstead, Hempstead Gardens and Lakeview, and Hempstead Lake State Park forms its eastern edge. Lakeview takes its name from the lake.

Census figures put the median year built across the two hamlets at 1954, with three in four homes built before 1960. Owners of houses that age often weigh a renovation against a knockdown and a fresh start.

How a project works in West Hempstead

Two hamlets, one Town office

Neither West Hempstead nor Lakeview is an incorporated village; both are hamlets of the Town of Hempstead. That puts building permits and forms with the Town’s Department of Buildings, which receives them through its Online Permit Center, and leaves variance requests to the Town’s Board of Appeals.

West Hempstead teardowns and the Town's checklist

Six items on the Town's list

A demolition in either hamlet starts with the Town of Hempstead’s October 2025 instructions. First comes a plumbing permit for disconnecting sewer and water, which the Town wants before the building permit. The rest of the list: a recent survey and a plot plan marking the structure, disconnect letters from PSEG and National Grid plus the 811 ticket, an asbestos affidavit, a County extermination certificate, and affidavits on voids and tree preservation.

Nassau County’s Health Department inspects before anything is disturbed and issues the rodent-free certificate that goes with the application. Demolition then has to start within ten days of the inspection date printed on it.
