Home rebuilds and renovations in Bellmore
Farm town to commuter suburb
Bellmore went by Little Neck and New Bridge until its post office opened in 1900 under the name it still carries. It was a farming and fishing community until the railroad station made it a commuter town in the 1920s, when the population began to climb, though working farms held on as late as the 1960s.
Census figures put the median year built for the Bellmores at 1958, with close to three in five homes dating from before 1960. Those houses now raise the same decision: update what is there, or clear the lot and build again.
How a project works in Bellmore
One Town office, north and south
Bellmore and North Bellmore, known together as the Bellmores, are both unincorporated parts of the Town of Hempstead. Neither has a village government, so every permit, from a new house to a garage coming down, is issued by the Town’s Department of Buildings, which takes its filings through an online permit portal.

Bellmore flood projects and building near the bay
Flood rules near the water
The County’s hazard mitigation plan lists Bellmore among the hamlets where the Town proposes raising roadways. It names a road elevation project in the Army, Navy and Marine Place area, a revetment at Newbridge Road Park on Cedar Swamp Creek and a masonry seawall on Centre Avenue. Where a lot is in a flood hazard area, the Town puts the design flood elevation two feet above the base flood elevation.
The Town also says a substantially damaged building, one needing repairs worth half or more of its pre-disaster value, has to meet state and FEMA construction guidelines before it receives a certificate of occupancy, and that may include raising the dwelling.
