Home rebuilds and renovations in Wantagh
A station stop called Ridgewood
Wantagh sits on part of an early English settlement tract called Jerusalem, which it shares with Seaford and southern Levittown. The community that grew up near the 1867 railroad station was known as Ridgewood until 1891, when it was renamed Wantagh. Its Victorian station, built in 1885, still stands because the Wantagh Preservation Society formed in 1965 to keep it from being demolished.
Census figures put the median year built for Wantagh and North Wantagh at 1957, and about seven in ten homes were built before 1960. Owners of houses that age compare the cost and disruption of a gut renovation with a teardown and a new build.
How a project works in Wantagh
No village hall, one Town department
Neither Wantagh nor North Wantagh is an incorporated village. Both are hamlets of the Town of Hempstead, so building and demolition permit applications go to the Town’s Department of Buildings, which administers the building, plumbing, electrical and housing codes and accepts filings online.

Building a new house in Wantagh: the Town's filing
What a new house files
When a new house goes up, or work exceeds 50% of a building, the Town of Hempstead’s instructions ask for a proposed survey showing lot coverage and setbacks, the datum of the nearest Nassau County test well with the groundwater elevation at the site, and sealed architectural and structural plans. Once the foundation is finished, a licensed land surveyor’s foundation location survey goes in before anything else is built.
Taking the old house down first has its own list: a survey and plot plan, utility disconnect letters with the 811 ticket, an asbestos affidavit and a notarized voids affidavit covering cellars, buried walls and storage tanks.
